What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, also known as the third molars, usually appear in the late teens to early twenties. Unfortunately, many people don't have room in their mouths for their wisdom teeth to erupt in the correct position, leading to a host of complications. That's why extracting wisdom teeth is one of the most commonly performed oral surgeries today.

What Is PRP Therapy?

At My Sherman Dentist, we offer platelet-rich plasma, or PRP therapy, at the time of tooth extraction to promote healing. Your PRP is created by spinning a small amount of your blood in a centrifuge. It is rich in growth factors, harnessing the body’s healing power to support healing and recovery. PRP therapy has been shown to promote clotting, significantly reduce healing time, and reduce the risk of complications such as dry socket.

How We Help You Relax During Treatment

At My Sherman Dentist, we always prioritize your comfort and well-being. Dr. Davis is pleased to offer IV sedation, which involves the use of IV medications to create a deep state of relaxation, helping you feel comfortable and anxiety-free while receiving the exceptional care you deserve. Dr. Davis has extensive training and experience and is certified to administer IV sedation, providing a safe, effective, and personalized experience. Dr. Davis is also happy to offer nitrous oxide sedation, if needed, for your comfort.

Why Would You Need to Have Your Wisdom Teeth Extracted?

The wisdom teeth are notorious for causing problems, such as being impacted or trapped in the jawbone. Bacteria around the impacted teeth can lead to complications, including pain, decay on the adjacent teeth, cysts, swollen gums, and even abscesses, which can spread the infection to the surrounding teeth and jawbone. The wisdom teeth can also erupt at an incorrect angle, placing pressure on the neighboring teeth and leading to crowding or alignment concerns.

At My Sherman Dentist, we typically recommend wisdom teeth extractions between ages 15-18 before the roots have fully formed, allowing for an easier procedure and quicker recovery. Younger patients tend to have quicker healing and experience fewer post-operative complications.

How Can You Promote Healing After Wisdom Teeth Extraction?

  • Make sure to follow the post-operative instructions we provide to promote healing.
  • Take the recommended pain relief medication as needed for your comfort.
  • Apply cold compresses to reduce any swelling.
  • Stick to soft foods for a few days and avoid hot or spicy foods that can irritate the extraction site.
  • Avoid smoking, using a straw, or rinsing vigorously for at least 48 hours to lower the risk of a painful complication known as dry socket.
  • Continue brushing and flossing while avoiding the extraction site.
  • If you have increased bleeding, swelling, or pain, or if you have any concerns in the days following extraction, contact our office.
